About the play:
The drama ‘Outcaste’ is based on an autobiography of the same name by SharankumarLimbale. It depicts the first-person account of the struggle against poverty, deprivation, discrimination and violence. Outcaste brings to the fore the impact of caste oppression in society, set in the backdrop of a Mahar village.
The play is a reflection of the darker side of India and highlights the lack of compassion that the lower castes have endured for centuries. The narrator is haunted bythe question of his fractured identity, “Am I an upper caste or an untouchable?” Directed by Randhir Kumar, the drama asserts the innerquest of dalit communities for identity, using original language, idiom, metaphor and imagery.
Randhir Kumar, a graduate of National School of Drama is the recipient of UstadBismilla Khan YuvaPuraskar of SangeetNatakAkademi (2013-14) and is a specialist in design and theatre technique. He is the founder and director of Raaga, a group of young theatre practitioners, writers, designers and musicians.
