About the play:
Directed by Jose Koshy, the drama ‘CharithrapusthakathilekkuOredu’ is the theatrical expression of the short-story ‘Upanyasam’ by TV Kochubava. It is also the translation of the director’s memories as a child and teenager of amazing acrobats and performers who led a nomadic life.
The rural interiors of Kerala were once entertained and enthralled by cycle yajnams (cycling in a limited space for prolonged periods) by Kochanthony (Anthony) and his group. The 1960s was the golden era of cycle yajnamsin Kerala. The amused spectators took these performers to their hearts and tried to kindle one’s own creative quest through these performances. But later in the following decades in the upsurge of new avenues of entertainment, cycle yajnams eventually passed into oblivion.
Jose Koshy is a freelance theatre director, light designer and equipment designer from Kerala. Winner of the best light designer award at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) for the play Spinal Cord in 2010, Jose has directed a play ‘Rashamon A Memory’ based on the film by Akira Kurosawa.
