About the play:
Based on short stories by Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, the drama ‘Bharat Matha Ki Jai’ directed by Lokesh Jain is a veritable tribute to motherhood. The drama portrays the stories of five elderly women, with each tale narrated by one performer.The drama unfolds through the story of Naani, a Brahmin woman from Pune, who identifies herself with freedom fighters; Hakeemat, a weaver from Panipat, who donates all her gold jewelleryto KhudaiKhidmatgar freedom movement; Maa, a high caste Brahmin woman who revolted against the conservative and reactionary tradition of Brahmins and embraced people from different faiths including Muslims; MaaJi who who migrated to India from Peshawar in the wake of the Partition of India, who treats all those who have been uprooted from their soil irrespective of their religion and the fifth,Ammi, the mother of Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, who lost all her property in the communal carnage, yet refused to migrate to Pakistan. The drama Bharat Matha Ki Jai highlights these five women as embodiment of humanism. No one has heard about them or their stories reported by media.
With three decades of experience in theatre, director Lokesh Jain is an explorer of diverse form of theatre and is the founder of ‘Jamghat’ a group comprising street children and the creative director of ‘Mandala’ the magic circle.
